竿俊作 - SAOTOSHISAKU

Career:

Born in Tokyo in 1930 as a son of a river fisher. Shortly after the war ended in 1945, he started learning wazao crafting specifically with Hotei bamboo under Saotoshi. AFter 12 years of learning, he opened his own atlier/tackle store. Around the 1970's he closed the tackle shop and focused solely on crafting wazao.

 

Story:

He personally liked fishing Ayu, and made rods for it with passion. He had a strong connection with fishers in Kano river who are known as the bestw Ayu fishers. His rods made for stream-fishing were called "Fuchu Tenkar" and was loved especially by the members of the Japan Stream-Fishing Association.
