A Clear-stream Rod, Draped in Deep Crimson, Restored After Nearly 60 Years

This piece is reconstructed from 1950s–60s deadstock — a limited collection of bamboo rods restored to life by an experienced rod builder after nearly 60 years.
A wazao, built by joining multiple sections of bamboo, is characterized by the lustrous sheen and durability of its urushi (Japanese lacquer) finish; its supple movement makes it suited to delicate fishing. A nobezao (telescoping rod without reel) is a very simple type of fishing rod that requires no reel — among rods, the one that lets the angler feel a fish's pull most directly.
WAZAO-IPPON is a fishing brand devoted to Japanese tackle, centered on the wazao — Japan's indigenous bamboo fishing rod. With the theme "even if you don't catch a fish, that's fine," it explores what nature experience can become, and uses fishing as its entry point to weave together the older Japanese culture being lost in modern society.
*Note: in this article, "nobezao" refers to the general category of rods that connect the line directly to the rod tip, without using a reel.
